FAQ’s About This Tour
Take a look at the Frequently Asked Questions about the Whispers on Whiskey Row dark history tour:
FAQ’s About What’s Included
What’s included in the ticket price?
Your ticket includes 1.5 hours of expert storytelling with a knowledgeable local guide, one cocktail at a haunted historic bar on Whiskey Row (mocktails, beer, and soda also available), a lightweight audio headset so you can hear every story clearly from any distance, and a bathroom stop along the route. There is no food on this tour. Guide gratuity is not included but is always appreciated.
Is there food on this tour?
No, this tour does not include food. It’s shorter, runs later at night, and is priced more affordably precisely because we left food off the menu. (Nothing kills an appetite quite like grisly stories, anyway.)
If you’d like food with your ghost stories, our Phantoms of Prohibition tour covers similar Prohibition-era haunted territory with four cocktails and a full spread of small bites.
I don’t drink — can I still enjoy this tour?
Absolutely. We stop for just one drink inside a haunted bar, and mocktails and soda are available. The stories are the real star of the show, and your guide will make sure you have a great time whether you’re drinking or not.
FAQ’s About The Experience
Is this a ghost tour, a dark history tour, or a true crime tour?
All of the above! Yes, we tell ghost stories. But this is not a ghost hunting tour. You won’t be going inside any buildings looking for spirits with equipment, and we make no promises about paranormal encounters. Every single story told on this tour is about a real person, drawn from fully verified, deeply researched historical facts. We believe true dark history is far spookier than anything invented, and Louisville’s past gives us plenty to work with.
(Important note: All of our tales are told with deep respect for the real people who were affected by the terrible events of the past. We believe listening to the whispers of the past is crucial to not repeating those tragic mistakes, even if it sometimes makes us uncomfortable.)
How scary is this tour?
This tour is genuinely unsettling, but not in a jump-scare haunted house kind of way. The horror here comes from real history: actual people, actual events, and the very real darkness lurking beneath Louisville’s charming exterior. Our guides are expert storytellers who know how to build atmosphere, but none of the facts are fabricated or exaggerated for effect. The true stories are disturbing enough on their own.
This also means that even skeptics and non-believers get chills and goosebumps on our tour, because the ghost stories aren’t the scariest part, the horrible-but-true history is.
If you’re looking for theatrical jump scares, this isn’t the tour for you. If you’re a true crime fan, history buff, or lover of the macabre who wants to be genuinely unsettled by morbidly true tales and grisly history, this tour will deliver.
Is this an after-dark tour?
We time our tours to begin around sunset and end after dark, but how dark it actually gets depends on the time of year and your specific start time. In winter, 6 PM is pitch black. In midsummer, the sun may still be setting as late as 10 PM. If you want maximum spooky ambiance, book the latest available start time for your date.
Do we go inside any buildings on this tour?
The tour is primarily an outdoor walking experience through the streets, alleyways, and riverfront of downtown Louisville. The only indoor stop is your cocktail stop at a haunted historic bar on Whiskey Row. We do not go inside any establishments or privately owned buildings for ghost hunting (though you might get to peek into a window or two…)
How does this differ from the Phantoms of Prohibition tour?
Both tours cover Louisville’s darker history along Whiskey Row and include ghost stories, but they’re quite different experiences:
- Length: Whispers on Whiskey Row is 1.5 hours. Phantoms of Prohibition is 3 hours.
- Food: Whispers has no food. Phantoms includes small bites equivalent to a light dinner.
- Drinks: Whispers includes 1 cocktail. Phantoms includes 4 cocktails.
- Price: Whispers is more affordable. Phantoms is a premium evening dining experience.
- Focus: Whispers goes deeper and darker into Louisville’s true crime and grisly history. Phantoms balances ghost stories with Prohibition history and a food and cocktail experience.
- Vibe: Whispers is raw and unsettling. Phantoms is atmospheric, but more upbeat.
If you want to go deep into the dark and unsavory side of Louisville and aren’t hungry, Whispers is your tour. If you want the full evening experience with food and drinks, Phantoms of Prohibition is the one.
FAQ’s About Logistics
Where does the tour start and where should I park?
Meet your guide at the entrance to the Belvedere Plaza, at the intersection of South 5th Street & West Main Street in downtown Louisville. Here is the Google Maps link. Please arrive 15 minutes before your tour start time. Your guide will be standing at the base of the lamppost to the right side of the walkway, facing toward the river with your back to the street. Your confirmation email will include a photo showing exactly where to find them.
The Belvedere cannot be accessed by car, so you’ll need to park nearby. Metered street parking is free after 6 PM but can be hard to find. There are paid parking garages throughout the area — here is a map of nearby garages. The tour ends at Jefferson Square Park, about a 10-minute walk from the start, so parking somewhere between the two spots is ideal.
What time does the tour run and how long is it?
Whispers on Whiskey Row runs Tuesday through Sunday evenings, timed to begin around sunset. The tour lasts approximately 1.5 hours. Specific start times vary by season — check current availability at our booking page. For maximum atmosphere, book the latest available start time.
Will the tour start and end in the same place?
No. The tour ends at Jefferson Square Park, about a 10-minute walk from the Belvedere Plaza starting point. Your guide will make sure you know exactly how to get back to your car or your next destination.
How far do we walk and is the tour accessible?
The tour covers approximately 1.5 miles through downtown Louisville’s streets, alleyways, and riverfront. The route is flat and wheelchair accessible. All guests receive a lightweight audio headset so they can hear their guide clearly from any distance. Service animals are always welcome. The tour is primarily outdoors so please dress for the weather.
Are there bathroom stops on the tour?
Yes, there are two stops where restrooms are accessible: the cocktail stop at the haunted bar, and a midway stop at a small market. If you have specific needs, please let your guide know at the start of the tour.
Is this tour appropriate for all ages?
This tour covers true history that includes unsolved murders, plagues, riots, oppression, and other disturbing content. It also involves 1.5 hours of walking and standing outdoors in the dark. We suggest a minimum age of 12, but you know your children best, and we leave the call to your discretion. Children 2 and under are always welcome to join free of charge. This is not a family-friendly tour in the traditional sense, but mature teenagers often find it fascinating.
