FAQ’s About the Bourbon Trolley
Take a look at the Frequently Asked Questions about the Bourbon Trolley experience:
FAQ’s About What’s Included
What’s included in the Bourbon Trolley ticket price?
Your ticket includes multiple bourbon pours across curated flights and a distillery tasting, 2 half-size craft cocktails, several bourbon-infused food samples (such as barrel-aged sauces, spices, and sweets), a guided distillery tour with exclusive access, a private charter aboard the historic Old Fashioned Express trolley, expert guides for 3 hours, a Louisville Icons tote bag, and a 20% gratuity paid to the front of house staff at every stop. Guide gratuity is not included but is appreciated.
How much food will we be eating on this tour?
Very little – this is not a food tour. You’ll enjoy a few small bourbon-infused samples (such as barrel-aged sauces, spices, artisan chocolates, and other treats that showcase bourbon’s influence on Kentucky cuisine), but the focus of this experience is bourbon. We strongly recommend eating a hearty lunch before your tour and planning to go to dinner shortly after it ends. If you’re looking for a full food experience paired with bourbon, our Beyond the Barrel Bourbon & Food Tour includes a full dinner.
How much bourbon will we be drinking on this tour?
Quite a bit. You’ll enjoy roughly 6 bourbon pours total, enjoyed in flights across multiple stops as well as a dedicated distillery tasting. Plus, 2 half-size craft cocktails created exclusively for Bourbon Trolley guests. This is a substantial bourbon experience, so please plan accordingly and arrange transportation home before you arrive.
Will we be visiting bourbon distilleries on this tour?
Yes! The Bourbon Trolley includes exclusive access to a bourbon distillery for a customized tour and guided tasting. This is not the standard public distillery tour, it’s an exclusive private experience designed to give our guests behind-the-scenes access while allowing us to fit more stops into the 3-hour experience. The distilleries we visit are almost always sold out for standard tours, but allow exclusive access for Bourbon Trolley guests.
What take-home gifts are included?
Every guest will bring home a Louisville Icons tote bag. These bags are included in your ticket price at no extra charge.
FAQ’S About The Bourbon Trolley Experience
I’ve visited a lot of bourbon distilleries. Will I learn anything new on this tour?
Almost certainly, and that’s by design. The Bourbon Trolley is built to offer something entirely different from the standard Kentucky Bourbon Trail experience. Rather than one long distillery tour, we’ve curated a collection of the most unique and exclusive bourbon experiences in Louisville: hidden speakeasy tasting rooms, gourmet artisans who use bourbon in innovative ways, and behind-the-scenes access that isn’t available to the general public.
Every stop on this tour features something custom-created exclusively for Bourbon Trolley guests, like a craft cocktail made just for our group, a personalized tasting experience, or behind-the-scenes access you simply can’t get on your own. It’s the perfect complement to the Kentucky Bourbon Trail, and designed to be completely different than an all-day-long bourbon distillery tour experience out on the Trail.
How is this different from visiting Kentucky Bourbon Trail distilleries on my own?
The Bourbon Trolley gives you exclusive, curated access to experiences you genuinely cannot book independently. We worked directly with each of our partners to design custom experiences for our guests, not off-the-shelf public tours. You’ll visit more stops in 3 hours than you could manage on your own, travel between them on a comfortable private trolley, and have an expert guide providing context and stories throughout. It’s the difference between doing a self-guided driving trip (which means you can’t fully enjoy yourself) and having a local expert take you to the hidden gems for behind-the-scenes access. And designing all the experiences to be close to downtown Louisville means we can fit a LOT into 3 hours, making this the perfect way to squeeze in a full bourbon trail and distillery experience in a short timeframe!
I don’t drink — can I still do the Bourbon Trolley?
The Bourbon Trolley is primarily a bourbon experience and we do not offer mocktails on this tour. If you don’t drink but still want a great Louisville experience, we’d love to have you on one of our other tours that do offer non-alcoholic options, such as our NuLu Food & History Tour, Beyond the Barrel Bourbon & Food Tour, and Phantoms of Prohibition which can all accommodate non-drinkers with mocktail options.
Why does this tour cost more than your other tours? Is it worth the price?
The Bourbon Trolley is our most premium experience, and the price reflects everything that goes into it. Your ticket covers exclusive access to tasting rooms and a distillery that aren’t available to the public, several flights of bourbon pours and multiple craft cocktails, bourbon-infused samples, a private charter aboard the historic trolley with a driver, two expert guides, a take-home tote bag gift, and a 20% gratuity for the front of house staff at every stop. We also pay our guides and trolley drivers a livable wage, and pay full price to every local partner we work with.
In short: we’ve packed an entire day’s worth of bourbon experiences into 3 hours, without the driving, the planning, or the crowds.
Should I do a Kentucky Bourbon Trail tour, or the downtown bourbon tour on the Bourbon Trolley?
Spending a full day touring distilleries on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail and spending a half-day on the Bourbon Trolley are best thought of as complementary rather than competing experiences. A tour on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail takes you out into bourbon country to visit distilleries across the beautiful state of Kentucky, which is a fantastic full-day or multi-day experience if you have the time. But because most bourbon distilleries are so spread out, it typically takes a full day.
We designed The Bourbon Trolley to be the best bourbon tour in downtown Louisville. We wanted to create a tour that gives you a full bourbon experience in just 3 hours, all designed around the incredible distilleries and tasting rooms within downtown Louisville and its adjacent neighborhoods.
The Bourbon Trolley is designed for visitors who want a premium, curated bourbon experience without leaving downtown Louisville, and fits a surprising amount of bourbon tastings, tours, and experiences into just 3 hours. You don’t have to drive, you don’t need to plan, and every experience has been custom-designed exclusively for Bourbon Trolley guests. Many guests do both, spending a day on the Bourbon Trail and the Bourbon Trolley for a focused afternoon in the city.
If you have limited time in Louisville, or want a guided group experience with exclusive behind-the-scenes access rather than standard public distillery tours, the Bourbon Trolley is the ideal choice.
In short: we’ve packed an entire day’s worth of bourbon experiences into 3 hours, without the driving, the planning, or the crowds.
Which distilleries and tasting rooms does the Bourbon Trolley visit?
Each day is a little different! We have a number of distillery and tasting room partners, and there are more opening all the time. We like to keep things a bit of a mystery to keep it fun! Additionally, many of our partners are booked out weeks or even months in advance, so access is hard to guarantee. What we can tell you is that you’ll get to drink a lot of bourbon (and some bourbon cocktails), visit hidden gems you might not have otherwise discovered, learn about bourbon from our expert tour guides, and even taste a few bourbon-y treats.
Does the Bourbon Trolley tour stay in downtown Louisville?
The typical tour experience stays close to downtown, but does venture out of the downtown core. We have distilleries and tasting room partners in neighborhoods like NuLu, Butchertown, and even the Highlands. We’ll always make sure you get back to where you started at the end of the tour!
FAQ’s About Logistics
Where does the Bourbon Trolley tour start?
The tour meets at the PeeWee Reese Statue in front of Louisville Slugger Field, 401 E Main Street, Louisville, KY 40202. Please arrive 5–10 minutes before your tour’s start time. Your guide will be there to greet you.
What time does the Bourbon Trolley run and how long is it?
The Bourbon Trolley runs Thursdays and Fridays from 1:30 PM to 4:30 PM and is a 3-hour experience. Check current availability at our booking page.
Given the limited schedule and small group size (max 12 guests), this tour sells out quickly and typically has a wait list, so we recommend booking well in advance.
Will the tour start and end in the same place?
Yes, the trolley will drop you back at the starting point at Louisville Slugger Field at the end of the tour. You’ll end right where you began, making it easy to get back to your car or hotel.
How much walking is involved?
Very little, approximately 0.25 miles total. Most of your time is spent either aboard the climate-controlled historic trolley or seated at each stop. This is one of our most accessible experiences in terms of physical exertion. Comfortable shoes are still recommended, but you won’t be doing extensive walking.
Where should I park?
The tour starts at Louisville Slugger Field (401 E Main St). Paid parking is available in several lots and garages near the stadium in downtown Louisville. Street parking meters are free after 6 PM, but since the tour ends at 4:30 PM you’ll likely need a meter or lot. We strongly encourage taking an Uber or Lyft given the amount of bourbon you’ll be enjoying, it makes for a much more relaxed experience.
Is this tour 21+ only?
Yes, the Bourbon Trolley is strictly 21+ and ID is required at every stop. If you’re looking for a tour that welcomes all ages, our NuLu Food & History Tour is a wonderful family-friendly option.
Is the Bourbon Trolley accessible?
The Bourbon Trolley is wheelchair accessible for up to 1 guest with advance notice. Without advance notice, we cannot guarantee accommodation for a wheelchair, and guests may need to climb up 1-2 stairs and transfer to a seat. Please contact us before booking so we can make the appropriate arrangements for boarding the trolley and at each stop. The minimal walking (0.25 miles) and seated format makes this one of our more accessible experiences.
FAQ’s About Booking & Cancellation
How far in advance should I book?
The Bourbon Trolley runs only on limited days with a maximum of 12 guests per tour, and availability fills up quickly. We recommend booking as early as possible. During peak Louisville travel season (spring through fall) and major events like the Kentucky Derby, the tour typically books out with a waitlist several weeks in advance.
Can I cancel or reschedule my reservation?
Refundable tickets can be rescheduled or cancelled for a full refund up to 48 hours before the tour. Non-refundable tickets cannot be cancelled or rescheduled for any reason. To cancel or reschedule, call or text (502) 591-6155, email [email protected], or submit a contact form.
Can I book the Bourbon Trolley as a private experience?
Yes! The Bourbon Trolley is a spectacular private experience for groups and popular for corporate outings, celebrations, bachelorette parties, and client entertainment. We have an exclusive partnership with Old Fashioned Express for trolley charters and private rentals. Private bookings can be customized for your group. Visit our private tours page to learn more, or contact us for a custom quote.
Should I tip my guide?
Guide and driver gratuity is not included in the ticket price but is deeply appreciated. Your ticket already covers a 20% gratuity for the front of house staff at every stop we visit, so you do not need to tip anywhere we visit on the tour. For your guide and trolley driver, most guests tip between 5–20%. You can also pre-tip during booking. Also, leaving a 5-star review mentioning your guide by name earns them a paid bonus from us.
